# Tools

### Overview

Custom tools drive gathering progression.

Each tool type supports a different skill path.

That includes farming, fishing, foraging, mining, excavation, and archaeology.

Tools can improve XP, luck, fortune, speed, radius, replanting, growth, mutation chance, magnet chance, autosmelt, vein mining, and other utility stats.

Some tools come from skill progression.

Some are made through **Supercraft**.

Others come from NPCs, bosses, events, or special content.

{% hint style="info" %}
The best tool depends on the skill you are training.

A strong fishing rod does not replace a strong mining pickaxe.
{% endhint %}

### Tool progression tips

Focus on the tool that matches the skill you are leveling.

If you are farming, upgrade hoes.

If you are mining, upgrade pickaxes.

If you are fishing, upgrade rods.

Stronger tools usually give better luck, fortune, XP, speed, or skill-specific utility.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Pick a main skill

Choose the gathering skill you use most.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Upgrade the matching tool first

Put early upgrades into that skill's main tool line.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Add specialist tools later

Pick up mutation hoes, utility tools, or niche tools once your main setup is stable.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Some powerful tools are made through **Supercraft**.

Others are unlocked through NPCs, bosses, progression systems, or special areas.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://orange-lounge-smp.gitbook.io/orange-smp-wiki/custom-items/tools.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
