# Gems & Gem Sockets

### Overview

Gems are upgrade items used to improve custom gear.

They can add damage, health, mana, defense, crit bonuses, magic damage, skill stats, and other useful bonuses.

Gem progression mainly comes from [Spelunking Caverns](/orange-smp-wiki/areas/spelunking-caverns.md).

Mining, rocks, shards, gems, and sockets all connect into one upgrade path there.

{% hint style="info" %}
Gems are a long-term upgrade system.

Use stronger gems on gear you plan to keep for a while.
{% endhint %}

### Main gem NPCs

These three NPCs handle most of the gem system:

| NPC              | What they do                                                 |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Shard Forge | Turns colored rocks into colored shards. |
| Gem Forge | Turns base gems and materials into stronger socketable gems. |
| Gem Socket Adder | Adds gem sockets to eligible gear. |

### How gem progression works

Gem progression follows a simple loop:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Mine rocks

Mine in Spelunking Caverns and collect colored rocks.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Forge shards

Bring rocks to the **Shard Forge** and turn them into matching colored shards.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Make base gems

Use shards and other materials to craft or obtain base gems.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Upgrade gems

Bring base gems to the **Gem Forge** and forge stronger socketable versions.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Add sockets and apply gems

Use the **Gem Socket Adder** on eligible gear, then match each gem to the correct socket color.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Mining rocks

Colored rocks are the first step in gem progression.

Each rock color connects to a matching shard, gem, and socket color.

| Rock             | Shard             |
| ---------------- | ----------------- |
| Red Rock         | Red Shard         |
| Dark Red Rock | Dark Red Shard |
| Light Red Rock | Light Red Shard |
| Blue Rock        | Blue Shard        |
| Light Blue Rock | Light Blue Shard |
| Dark Blue Rock | Dark Blue Shard |
| White Rock       | White Shard       |
| Green Rock       | Green Shard       |
| Light Green Rock | Light Green Shard |
| Dark Green Rock | Dark Green Shard |
| Black Rock       | Black Shard       |
| Orange Rock      | Orange Shard      |
| Brown Rock       | Brown Shard       |
| Gold Rock        | Gold Shard        |
| Yellow Rock      | Yellow Shard      |
| Pink Rock        | Pink Shard        |
| Purple Rock      | Purple Shard      |

### Shard Forge

The **Shard Forge** turns rocks into shards.

Each shard recipe uses:

| Requirement   |     Amount |
| ------------- | ---------: |
| Matching Rock |          2 |
| Money         |   $100,000 |
| Forge Time    | 30 seconds |

Example conversions:

| Input          | Output       |
| -------------- | ------------ |
| 2 Red Rocks    | Red Shard    |
| 2 Blue Rocks   | Blue Shard   |
| 2 Green Rocks  | Green Shard  |
| 2 Purple Rocks | Purple Shard |

Shards are not the final upgrade.

They are materials used to move toward actual gems.

### Crafting base gems

After you get shards, the next step is making or obtaining base gems.

These are later upgraded into stronger socketable gems.

Examples include:

| Base Gem        |
| --------------- |
| Red Gem         |
| Dark Red Gem    |
| Light Red Gem   |
| Blue Gem        |
| Light Blue Gem  |
| Dark Blue Gem   |
| White Gem       |
| Green Gem       |
| Light Green Gem |
| Dark Green Gem  |
| Black Gem       |
| Orange Gem      |
| Brown Gem       |
| Gold Gem        |
| Yellow Gem      |
| Pink Gem        |
| Purple Gem      |

Once you have a base gem, take it to the **Gem Forge**.

### Gem Forge

The **Gem Forge** upgrades base gems into real socketable gems.

Forged gems come in different tiers:

| Tier      | Meaning                 |
| --------- | ----------------------- |
| Uncommon | First upgraded gem tier |
| Rare      | Stronger gem tier       |
| Legendary | High-tier gem           |
| Mythical  | Strongest gem tier      |

Higher tiers usually need rarer materials, more money, and stronger essences.

Common ingredient types:

| Material Type  | Examples                                                                          |
| -------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Base Gems | Red Gem, Blue Gem, Green Gem, and other color gems |
| Essences | Uncommon Essence, Rare Essence, Legendary Essence, Mythical Essence |
| Area Materials | Rare ores, mob drops, boss drops, fishing drops, foraging drops, excavation drops |
| Money | Used as part of the forging cost |

### Gem colors

Each gem belongs to a color.

It can only be used on a matching socket color.

| Gem Color   |
| ----------- |
| Red         |
| Dark Red    |
| Light Red   |
| Blue        |
| Light Blue  |
| Dark Blue   |
| White       |
| Green       |
| Light Green |
| Dark Green  |
| Black       |
| Orange      |
| Brown       |
| Gold        |
| Yellow      |
| Pink        |
| Purple      |

Some special gems may follow unique socket rules.

### Gem Socket Adder

The **Gem Socket Adder** adds gem sockets to eligible gear.

Gem sockets can be added to many custom item types:

| Item Type   |
| ----------- |
| Armor       |
| Swords      |
| Tools       |
| Bows        |
| Crossbows   |
| Staffs      |
| Wands       |
| Accessories |
| Rings       |
| Amulets     |
| Bracelets   |
| Gloves      |
| Ornaments   |
| Artifacts   |

Once a piece of gear has a socket, apply a gem that matches the socket color.

Examples:

| Socket        | Matching Gem |
| ------------- | ------------ |
| Red Socket    | Red Gem      |
| Blue Socket   | Blue Gem     |
| Green Socket  | Green Gem    |
| Purple Socket | Purple Gem   |

### What gems can improve

Different gems support different builds.

Some focus on damage.

Others improve defense, magic, survival, mobility, or gathering.

| Gem Focus     | Possible bonuses                                                       |
| ------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Damage | Attack damage, weapon damage, PvE damage, PvP damage |
| Critical Hits | Crit chance, crit damage, skill crit stats |
| Defense | Armor, damage reduction, physical defense, PvE defense |
| Survival | Max health, regeneration, toughness |
| Magic | Max mana, magic damage, cooldown reduction |
| Mobility | Speed, movement effects, utility stats |
| Skill Builds | Mining, fishing, foraging, farming, excavation, or other skill bonuses |

The best gem depends on your build and the gear you are upgrading.

### Example gem progression

Here is a simple example:

1. Mine in Spelunking Caverns.
2. Find Red Rocks.
3. Bring 2 Red Rocks to the **Shard Forge**.
4. Forge them into a **Red Shard**.
5. Use shards and materials to make a **Red Gem**.
6. Bring the Red Gem to the **Gem Forge**.
7. Upgrade it into a stronger socketable gem.
8. Add a **Red Socket** to your gear with the **Gem Socket Adder**.
9. Apply the Red Gem to your gear.

### NPC locations

| NPC              | Location           |    Coordinates |
| ---------------- | ------------------ | -------------: |
| Gem Forge        | Spelunking Caverns | `-61 47 -2748` |
| Gem Socket Adder | Spelunking Caverns | `-56 51 -2738` |
| Shard Forge      | Spelunking Caverns | `-55 51 -2742` |

### Tips

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Save strong gems for long-term gear

Do not spend top-tier gems on gear you are about to replace.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Match gems to your build

Use damage gems for combat, health and defense gems for survivability, mana and magic gems for casters, and skill gems for gathering builds.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Check socket color first

If your item does not have the right socket color, visit the **Gem Socket Adder** before trying to apply the gem.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://orange-lounge-smp.gitbook.io/orange-smp-wiki/areas/spelunking-caverns/gems-and-gem-sockets.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
